Deny himself
The first demand of discipleship or of being a follower of Christ is self-denial.
What is self-denial and why must it be present to be a follower of Christ?
The Greek word deny here is the same word used in chapter 26 in relation to Peter denying that he knew the Lord.
How does that change your perspective on what this is calling a disciple to do to himself?
Take up his cross
The second demand of discipleship or being a follower of Christ is taking up your cross.
What does it mean to take up your cross? Why is it necessary to be a follower of Christ?
What did it mean for Jesus to take up his cross?
“To take up one's cross is simply to be willing to pay any price for Christ’s sake. It is the willingness to endure shame, embarrassment, reproach, rejection, persecution, and even martyrdom for His sake.” John Macaruther
Follow Me
The third demand of discipleship or being a follower of Christ is following Him
What does it mean to follow him and why is it necessary to be a follower of Christ?
“By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” 1 John 2:5b-6
“Follow Me” means obedience
Are you being obedient to Christ? Are you walking in the same way He did?

What does it mean to save your life? Or to gain the whole world?
Earthly preservation, reputation, comfort in this life, avoiding persecution
What is the result of the one who “saves his life”?
He loses his life. He will spend eternity separated from God.
He forfeits his soul
The one who loses his life
What does it mean to lose your life?
Not having the popularity, not being liked in this world, having persecution, maybe even dying as a martyr.
What is the result of the one who “loses his life”?
Eternal life with your heavenly Father!

Jesus is coming back
Someday Jesus is going to come back to earth. He is going to bring judgment and repay according to what each person has done.
